Asignatura perteneciente a la Lingüística Inglesa, completa y amplía los conocimientos de morfología, sintaxis, fonética y fonología de la lengua inglesa estándar, así como los adquiridos en las asignaturas obligatorias, de tercer y cuarto curso, respectivamente, Historia de la Lengua Inglesa y Gramática Histórica. Así mismo, está relacionada con las asignaturas optativas Variación Lingüística en Inglés Moderno y Dialectología Inglesa. Esta asignatura permite poner en práctica, de forma más extensa, y detallada, todos los conocimientos adquiridos con estas materias.

Asignatura Optativa de segundo ciclo con carácter semestral dentro de la titulación de Grado en Estudios Ingleses de la Facultad de Filología.

Unit 1. Introduction to the history of the English language.

1. The language of Old English (700-1066/1100) through texts. Regional variation.
2. The language of Middle English (1066/1100-1500) through texts. Dialectal diversity in ME.
3. The Early Modern English period. (1500-1700). Variation: South and North.

Unit 2. English in Great Britain since 1700.

1.  Introducing late Modern English. English since 1700.
2. Social and historical developments in Britain and Ireland.
3. Regional variation. Literary dialects/ dialect literature.
   1. Northern English.
   2. West-Midland English.
   3. East-Midland English.
   4. Southern English.
4. Urban varieties.

Unit 3. English in North America.

1. The beginnings of English in North America: General American.
2.  Ethnic variety within American English.

Itinerario A: Requiere Presencialidad. Será necesario asistir regularmente, a un 85 % de las clases.

La nota final será la suma de tres calificaciones:

1.- Participación en clase (15%)

2.- Tres pruebas escritas (15%, 20%, 20%). Dichas pruebas versarán sobre los contenidos del programa. Se indicarán las fechas al comenzar el curso.

3.- Trabajo/análisis lingüístico de un texto dialectal: 30%. Será necesario:

                a.- Entregar el trabajo en las fechas indicadas. Se subirá a Studium.

                b.- Seguir las pautas para la realización del trabajo que se darán oportunamente.

 Aquellos alumnos que se acojan a este itinerario no tendrán que realizar el examen final de junio.

Itinerario B: No requiere Presencialidad.

Examen final que se compondrá de ejercicios:

                a. Teóricos sobre los contenidos del programa

                b. Prácticos que consistirán en el análisis de  textos siguiendo las pautas establecidas en clases.

Los alumnos deberán consultar Studium regularmente para acceder a los materiales teóricos y prácticos que se irán añadiendo a lo largo del curso.
