Module 1: What is discourse?                                            

Introduction and discussion of basic notions related to the concepts of text and discourse; text and discourse constituents; text and discourse as interactive processes; discourse genres and the concepts of register and context.

Module 2: The discourse of politics

Introduction and discussion of basic notions related to the concepts of language and power; language structure and social claims; linguistic and discourse strategies in political discourse.

Module 3: The discourse of interpersonal relations 

Introduction and discussion of basic notions related to the concepts of conversational styles; language awareness as a discourse strategy; meaning and metamessage.

Module 4: The discourse of careers

Introduction and discussion of basic notions related to the concepts of organisational careers, boundaryless careers and portfolio careers; the new knowledge worker and gender issues in the reconceptualisation of careers. 

CB2. Que los estudiantes sepan aplicar sus conocimientos a su trabajo o vocación de una forma profesional y posean las competencias que suelen demostrarse por medio de la elaboración y defensa de argumentos y resolución de problemas dentro de su área de estudio.

CG1. Desarrollar la capacidad de recibir, comprender y transmitir la producción científica en inglés.

CG2. Desarrollar la capacidad para evaluar críticamente la bibliografía consultada y para encuadrarla en una perspectiva teórica. 

CG3. Relacionar el conocimiento filológico con otras áreas y disciplinas.

CE1. Consolidación del uso de la lengua inglesa como vehículo comunicativo y como herramienta de trabajo y de investigación. 

CE4. Conocimiento teórico-práctico de los recursos de producción, comprensión e interpretación de textos en lengua inglesa. 

CE5. Conocimiento teórico-práctico de los diferentes registros lingüísticos y de su adecuación al contexto comunicativo. 

CE9. Conocimiento de las técnicas y métodos del análisis lingüístico.

Students will be expected to attend classes, read the assigned material, and participate actively in all coursework activities.

Students who attend classes regularly will be assessed on the basis of class attendance, class participation, coursework assignments, short presentations (40%), and two written tests, which will be taken after the second and third modules of the course (60%). The first and fourth modules will be assessed through pair-work and short presentations.                                                       

Students who do not attend classes regularly will be graded on the basis of the final written exam which can be on any aspect of the course.

Oral presentations, class participation and debates 40%

Students are recommended to attend classes, to read the course readings, and to discuss the course topics with the professor and with the other students in class.
