To attain a deep knowledge of the causes, implications and regulation of ethnicity, nationalism and national conflict.

-Students will understand the nature of nations, nationalism, and ethnicity in contemporary social theory
-Students will understand how different patterns of race and ethnic relationsemerge in multiethnic societies.
-Students will understand why the character of race and ethnic relations in heterogeneous societies may be more conflictual or harmonious.
-Students will be able to identify contemporary multiethnic nations andconsider possible strategies to minimize conflict.
