The aim is to provide students with knowledge of key concepts of the subject and the ability to apply these concepts in a final group project.

4. Objetivo de la asignatura
The acquisition of knowledge in this complex field of study: sociolinguistic, ethnographic and social psychological theoretical frameworks and the ability to apply selected concepts.
Course aims are related to the set of skills and abilities presented in section 6.
5. Contenidos
Teoría.
Brief description of the content
Set I: Key concepts. Selected readings.
Set II: Practical applications of sociolinguistics in a group project: students will learn and apply relevant sociolinguistic notions to specific social contexts

The ability to apply sociolinguistic knowledge in a final group project will be an essential dimension in this subject. Methodology: Project-based learning and Team-based learning |
Group work will be compulsory and it will not be substituted by any other activity. The group will work like a team during the course and will explore in depth a range of issues related to the subject, showing analytical and critical thinking skills.

Each group of students will give a final oral presentation, where they will show that they have achieved the aims of the subject. |

Out of class individual and group tasks

Students will be required to read in depth set readings, to revise the theoretical explanations presented in class, and to devote time to applying that knowledge to analyse specific issues indicated by the teacher.

10. Evaluación
Consideraciones generales.
A continuous assessment system will be implemented in this course, instead of a final evaluation. This requires compulsory attendance. Please take this into account when choosing this elective.
Course requirements:
--Attendance is compulsory in this subject. Enrolling in another elective that is taught during the same time slot MUST be avoided.
--Group dynamics will be used in this subject. In-class and out-of-class group tasks will be required throughout the course to deeply understand the content. In this system, students are very much expected to be active in each class.
--Students are also expected to prepare the set readings indicated on Studium
--Students are warned that neither laptops nor mobile phones are allowed in class unless specifically requested by the teacher/instructor for class activities. Politeness is always required.
--Requirements: A C1 level of English is required. Being able to understand abstract knowledge will facilitate engaging in the subject.
- An active and responsible attitude is demanded in class, in order to prepare required readings individually, and engage in team work for the final group project.
Criterios de evaluación.
A continuous assessment system will be implemented in this course, instead of a final evaluation. This entails the following requirements:
- Completing an Individual Portfolio on set readings (10%)
- Taking a Multiple Choice Test (30%) during the course, once the course content has been presented by the educator.
NOTICE that this Test is part of the continuous assessment process. This means that this test will only be taken during the course since it is considered a fundamental stage towards the preparation of final group project.
- Completing a final Group Project (60%), which will be presented at the end of the course, as the last part of the continuous assessment system.
- NOTICE: The workload in this course will be distributed between attendance to classes and out of class individual and group activities. We may require groups to refine and modify their group project, after their oral presentation in class. The last two weeks of the course may be devoted to this.
Second ‘convocatoria’

- Online submission of an Individual Expanded Portfolio (40%)

The following recommendations:
- Attend classes regularly, since attendance is compulsory in this course.
- Complete the required tasks and readings for their Individual Portfolios.
- Be attentive and active.
Engage in group work and complete the required group assignment.

Those students who fail this course in the first ‘convocatoria’ will have to do the following:
- Submit an individual or group Project, (60%)
- Submit an expanded Individual Portfolio of set readings (40%).
NOTICE: The multiple choice test will only be taken during the course, as part of the continuous assessment system that will be implemented in this course.
