2. Association of the subject matter within the study plan
Purpose of the subject within the curricular area and study plan.
To attain a deep knowledge of the causes, implications and regulation of ethnicity, nationalism and national conflict.
Professional profile.
NGOs, International Institutions, Public Administrations, Human Rights institutions.

-To consider different sources of diversity within contemporary societies
-To understand the nature of nations, nationalism, and ethnicity in contemporary social theory
-To consider how different patterns of race and ethnic relations emerge in multiethnic societies.
-To learn about different institutional designs that allow dealing with diversity.
-To understand public attitudes towards immigrants and national minorities

4. Public policies and institutional arrangements in contexts of diversity

8. Ethnocultural conflicts under scrutiny: the Balkans and Rwanda
Practice.
Practical exercises will be explained during the course. Specific topics will be chosen considering the evolution of the theoretical sessions and the interests of the students.

A complete list of articles (at least two per session) will be uploaded to Studium at the beginning of the course. Reading the articles before each session is not mandatory, but it will be of great help to follow the content of the class and take an active role on it.
10. Assessment
Assessment tools.
- Participation 20%
- Assessment of practical exercises 50%
- Final exam 30% (an overall minimum mark of 4 is required in the exam)
Assessment recommendations.
Attending theoretical sessions is highly recommended
Practical assignments account for a relevant part of the final mark. Participating and completing all practical exercises is advised.
