Purpose of the subject within the curricular area and study plan.
To attain a deep knowledge of the causes, implications and regulation of ethnicity, nationalism and national conflict.
Professional profile.
NGOs, International Institutions, Public Administrations, Human Rights institutions.

-To consider different sources of diversity within contemporary societies
-To understand the nature of nations, nationalism, and ethnicity in contemporary social theory
-To consider how different patterns of race and ethnic relations emerge in multiethnic societies.
-To learn about different institutional designs that allow dealing with diversity.
-To understand public attitudes towards immigrants and national minorities

3. Public policies and institutional arrangements in contexts of diversity
4. Ethnicity and conflict
5. Irredentas and secessions
6. When secessions fail: Kosovo
7. Ethnic cleansing and genocide
8. Ethnocultural conflict and international intervention: Rwanda and Bosnia
Practice.
Practical exercises will be explained during the course. Specific topics will be chosen considering the evolution of the theoretical sessions and the interests of the students.

10. Assessment
Assessment tools.

- Final exam 30% (an overall minimum mark of 4 is required in the exam)

Practical assignments account for a relevant part of the final mark. Participating and completing all practical exercises is advised.
