• Introduction: Semantics as the study of meaning 
• Constructing meaning 
  • Cognitive semantics: General aspects of conceptualization, categorization and representation: Prototypes, frames, mental spaces and mental models. 
    • The conceptual theory of metaphor. 
    • Blending theory. 
    • The conceptual integration network model                          

Module 2

• Discourse semantics: Structure and functions of text and discourse.
  • The semantic constituents of discourse (1). Cohesion: Cohesive devices: Reference, substitution, ellipsis, conjunction, lexical cohesion.  
  • The semantic constituents of discourse (2). Coherence: Local and global coherence, types of meaning relations, the hierarchical organization of the information, the notions of theme, topic and comment, the concept of macrostructure, the macrorules, global discourse topic and global discourse coherence. 
• Interpreting meaning: The process of interpretation, knowledge structures, the process of inferring. Cognition, language, and context.

Que los estudiantes hayan demostrado poseer y comprender conocimientos en un área de estudio que parte de la base de la educación secundaria general, y se suele encontrar a un nivel que, si bien se apoya en libros de texto avanzados, incluye también algunos aspectos que implican conocimientos procedentes de la vanguardia de su campo de estudio;
2. Que los estudiantes sepan aplicar sus conocimientos a su trabajo o vocación de una forma profesional y posean las competencias que suelen demostrarse por medio de la elaboración y defensa de argumentos y la resolución de problemas dentro de su área de estudio;
3. Que los estudiantes tengan la capacidad de reunir e interpretar datos relevantes (normalmente dentro de su área de estudio) para emitir juicios que incluyan una reflexión sobre temas relevantes de índole social, científica o ética;
4. Que los estudiantes puedan transmitir información, ideas, problemas y soluciones a un público tanto especializado como no especializado;
5. Que los estudiantes hayan desarrollado aquellas habilidades de aprendizaje necesarias para emprender estudios posteriores con un alto grado de autonomía.

1.Consolidación del uso de la lengua inglesa como vehículo comunicativo y como herramienta de trabajo y de investigación

2.Conocimiento teórico-práctico de los procesos de conceptualización y categorización, así como de los recursos estructurales y cognitivos  que aportan cohesión y coherencia al discurso en lengua inglesa.

3.Conocimiento de las técnicas y métodos del análisis lingüístico

Students are expected to attend classes (minimum 80%), read the assigned material in advance, and participate actively in all course exercises and debates. Time will be devoted to class discussion of theoretical issues and class work assignments. 

For those students who attend class on a regular basis (minimum 80%), there will be two tests, one at the end of each module, to ensure understanding of the subject matter. 

Students who are unable to attend classes regularly (less than 80%) will be evaluated on the basis of the final exam. 

Students who attend classes regularly (80% minimum) will be assessed on the basis of class attendance (10%), class participation (10%) and two end-of-module tests (80%). Class participation will be assessed through class observation and results in end-of-module tests. In order to achieve the maximum grade, students must score at least 8/9 in the two tests.

Students who do not attend classes regularly (less than 80%) will be graded on the basis of the final written exam only. The final exam can be on any aspect of the course.

Students are recommended to attend classes, to read the course readings, and to discuss the course topics with the professor and with the other students in class.
